Vail, CO Colorado
AVON, Colorado — It was two years ago that Slifer Designs started hearing about the aspirations and new interactive and educational programs being planned for the new Walking Mountains Science Center, particularly its goal of becoming a certified LEED Platinum facility. With four certified LEED designers, along with many staff who are parents that have had their children benefit from programs through the former Gore Range Natural Science School, Slifer Designs President Yvonne Jacobs decided to lend the company's support.
Totaling $34,000 in donated time and services, Slifer Designs' Kim Toms, a LEED accredited professional, spearheaded the selection of all the fixed finishes for the Science Center. Working in partnership with Brian Sipes of Zehren and Associates, RA Nelson, Condit Exhibits out of Denver and the board of directors, Toms was instrumental in sourcing renewable and/or recycled materials that are an integral part of the Center's educational features about eco-friendly building resources.
Highlights of the recycled and renewable products and features for the fixed finishes include:
Countertop slabs
• 70 percent composite sunflower seed hulls.
• 75 percent composite wood chips.
• Pre-consumer waste aluminum flake, solid surface scrap and recycled acrylic.
Cabinetry
• Bamboo — a renewable resource.
• Forest Service certified maple.
Wall coverings in restrooms
• Steel — a recycled material.
• Rubber and cork tile (rubber was recycled and cork is a renewable resource).
Lockers
• 100 percent recycled milk jugs
Flooring
• Polished concrete with some exposed aggregate and some dyed colors
