Rock Shop: Favorites in Our Store

Just as we expected when we visited the New York home show earlier this year, stones, quartz and minerals are popular right now. They add a lovely bit of bling, a hint of color and interesting texture to a room – in small enough doses not to overwhelm but large enough to be eye-catching. Back in August this fireplace really took the crowd by storm, effervescent and light while being solidly grounded and very much a main focal point. (Kathryn McCoy used quartz, calcite and selenite on a stunning fireplace surround and mirror… and a few other places.) The light was ethereal even in the large space. We like the heft of using stones or minerals for bookends and paperweights but they are polished to a sheen and seem light. A beautiful juxtaposition.

It’s funny, being in the heart of the Rockies we are surrounding by so much natural stone that sometimes we forget how beautifully it can be used to bring texture and sparkle to a room. Obviously, we love the onyx sinks, especially when they are under-lit and glow. But what about using a large stone to add an organic element to a room? Stones and crystals add sparkle and natural color – and a bit of wonderment.

We love all the different ways to use, decorate with and display stone. Clustering of minerals, quartz and crystals, set in a deep frame, offers an intriguing addition for visual interest.

Of course, you might want all of this for your home – but we’ve seen many of our clients giving the gift of stone as hostess gifts, to hard-to-shop-for parents and even as teacher gifts. The agate coasters, highly polished, come in colors not found in nature: bright oranges, deep azures, bold purples (by the way, a very ‘in’ color this year – it’s Pantone’s color of the year and comes in a range of hues from dark and lustrous to light and lilac) and the ever popular, yet casually understated gray.

Stay tuned to see some of our favorites from this fall’s High Point Market. From textures to grays, impactful architecture to luxurious sheepskin, we saw (and bought) a bit of everything!
