It’s Only Natural

After the Peterson family adopted this spec home, designed by architect Scott Turnipseed, they turned to Vail-based Slifer Designs’ president Yvonne Jacobs and design associate Audrey Barriault to make it their own. A Colorado native with 20 years of design experience, Jacobs knew how to create a space that’s just right for its alpine setting: add comfort and style with nature-inspired touches.

Tucked away into groves of aspen in a quiet Vail neighborhood, the home pairs contemporary mountain architecture with clean, classic touches. It is the quintessential retreat for a ski-loving South Dakota family.

In the great room, unexpected twists were created by mixing, not matching, furnishings and fabrics. Art Deco-style occasional chairs by Christian Grevstad and floral window treatments mingle with Theodore Waddell’s more modern painting, "Sheridan Horses."

In the dining area off the kitchen, a collection of Michael Berman chairs and a Bausman & Company dining table collaborate to form a vignette that’s anchored by subdued Kravet lounge chairs. An unexpected centerpiece made of rustic wood completes the look.

By juxtaposing a simple antique chair and Chinese wicker baskets against the limestone walls, Jacobs grounded the contemporary kitchen with warm touches and, in effect, brought down the high ceilings. The limestone bricks—Pillowed Halila from Decorative Materials—add interest and dimension, and the seafoam green granite introduces subtle color.

Facing a splendid mountain view in the master bedroom, a Kravet bench sits at the end of a PPM Collections bed. Nestled in its own elegant niche, the Ebanista chest is adorned by an antique mirror and lamp, adding to the serene feel of the space.

In the cozy library, where the family relaxes, symmetry prevails. The custom couch from Richman Upholstery is covered in gray mohair and sits perpendicular to woven linen windowpane-patterned Century chairs, while a custom leather-upholstered cocktail ottoman anchors the arrangement. For additional seating, round hair-on-hide Kravet stools can be pulled in from the hallway. Sheer drapes adorned with a branch-and-tree motif let natural light into the space, and the contents of the bookshelves were carefully arranged by interior designer Yvonne Jacobs.

A dramatic fireplace and rustic chandelier set a comfortable tone for the outdoor living room. All-weather wicker furnishings by Brown Jordan, suitable for any environment, are styled with cushions covered in fun Donghia fabric (called Zambezi) and colorful accent pillows.
